Our Story
Our story began on the lands of the Muluridji people in Mareeba, Far North Queensland—a place known as a meeting of waters, where diverse tribal nations, including the Yirrganydji, Kuku Yalanji, Djungan, Bar-Barrum, and Walkamin peoples, have gathered for tens of thousands of years. This confluence of cultures and landscapes shaped the foundation of Bahu Design Studio and our philosophy—where different elements come together in harmony, reflecting our belief in the power of connection and balance in design.
The name Bahu, derived from Sanskrit, means "abundance" or "many," symbolising the meeting of diverse ideas, materials and practices, just like the meeting of the waters. We believe in the potential of design to unite and uplift, harmonising the built environment with the natural world. Our vision is to create spaces that draw strength from nature’s abundance and resonate with the well-being of their inhabitants, flowing seamlessly between structure and surroundings.
Our journey first took root in Melbourne, on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people. Today we are based on unceded Bundjalung country in Byron Bay. Also known as Cavanbah, meaning 'meeting place,' this land with its sweeping beaches and sheltered beauty has long been a gathering spot for the Arakwal people and other tribes of the Bunjalung nation. Inspired by this spirit of connection, we design spaces that honour the deep relationships between land, sea, sky and people.
At Bahu, we draw inspiration from these places of gathering and convergence, creating designs that reflect the interconnectedness of nature and human life. By integrating sustainable practices, natural materials and mindful design, we aim to build not just homes and spaces but vibrant ecosystems where families, community and nature can flourish. In the spirit of the meeting places that have shaped our story, our vision is to craft spaces that invite life to gather and grow in harmony with the land, enriching both people and planet.

I’m Vanessa Girling, and as the director of Bahu Design Studio, I’m deeply devoted to creating sustainable spaces that nurture our collective well-being and foster genuine connections with the environment. As a surfer, my connection to nature runs deep, and it profoundly inspires my designs. With over 12 years of industry experience spanning Far North Queensland, Melbourne, and for the last 6 years the beautiful Northern Rivers of New South Wales, I’ve dedicated my career to exploring how our built environments can foster community and enhance collective well-being.
My journey has led me to embrace vernacular construction and natural building techniques, which I believe are essential for creating environments that resonate with their surroundings. I have worked in various roles from leading design firms, refining my skills in design development, project management and sustainable practices.
Beyond design, I’m also a certified meditation teacher and am deeply committed to promoting mental health and self-awareness in all aspects of my work. Through Bahu Design Studio, I strive to inspire positive change in the industry, crafting harmonious spaces where people and nature can thrive together.
