From Byron Bay to Biophilic Design: My NCP Journey Begins

Three weeks ago my life was a whirlwind. I had just found out I’d been awarded the prestigious New Colombo Plan (NCP) scholarship—a career-defining opportunity to study Biophilic Design in Singapore. At the same time my partner was undergoing invasive and life-threatening brain surgery. Deciding to leave him so soon after his recovery was one of the most stressful and emotional decisions I’ve ever made. Yet, with his unwavering encouragement and support, I found the strength to embark on this journey.

Yet, in the midst of it all, my partner and a dear friend organised the most thoughtful farewell party. It was a heartwarming surprise filled with laughter, love and well wishes from people who believe in me. That send-off gave me the strength and encouragement I needed to embrace this incredible opportunity, even though leaving was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

Before flying to Singapore I made a stop in Cairns to visit my family on their beautiful farm. Surrounded by rolling hills, green pastures and the serenity of nature, I was reminded of the deep connection to the land that has shaped so much of who I am. Growing up in Far North Queensland, surrounded by rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef, shaped my deep connection to nature. Spending time at home grounded me and reminded me why I’m so passionate about creating sustainable spaces that nurture mental health and foster community.

First Impressions of Singapore

Touching down in Singapore felt surreal. The city’s ability to harmonise cutting-edge urban design with lush greenery was immediately inspiring. On my first day I visited the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) to meet the team and faculty behind the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Biophilic Design. Their enthusiasm and expertise were palpable as we discussed how integrating nature into design can improve human wellbeing—an approach that aligns perfectly with my own values as a designer.

The House-Hunting Adventure

Finding a place to live in Singapore was another adventure entirely. With Joanna, my new friend and guide, I toured everything from sleek high-rises with infinity pools to charming walk-ups hidden in quiet neighbourhoods. Joanna’s insider knowledge and humour turned what could have been a stressful task into an enjoyable one. Although I haven’t found the perfect place just yet, I’m confident I’ll soon have a home where I can recharge and let creativity flow.

A New Chapter

This journey isn’t just about pursuing a degree. It’s about forging connections, growing as a designer and immersing myself in a culture that values harmony and innovation. Leaving my partner and starting this new chapter hasn’t been easy but it’s reaffirmed my purpose and resilience. I’m looking forward to sharing more about this journey—what I’m learning, the challenges I’m facing and how this vibrant city continues to inspire me.

If you’ve ever studied abroad or embarked on a life-changing journey, I’d love to hear your experiences. Let’s explore this together!

In the meantime, may your days be filled with presence, nature and love.

I look forward to sharing the coming weeks and months with you all.

再见 (zài jiàn) - “see you again“.
